FORT PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — With Missouri River water backing up ever so slightly into Fort Pierre, the Fort Pierre City Council got another update on the river’s status Monday night.
Public Works Director Rick Hahn says releases from Oahe Dam over the weekend were some of the highest all year.
Hahn says wind can play a significant role in the river’s elevation.
In addition to water covering some roads close to the river, it’s beginning to work up through the soils, too.
The higher flows also forced the City of Pierre to close fishing piers along the La Framboise causeway. River water is beginning to up over the decks on the fishing piers. Access to La Framboise Island is not impacted.
Pierre also closed an access road that runs along the river in Griffin Park. Holes two and 11 at Hillsview Golf Course are also seeing some standing water.
The U-S Army Corps of Engineers is hosting a public informational meeting on the Missouri River in Fort Pierre on Wednesday. The meeting starts at 10 am at the Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center.
