PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Leaders of both parties are welcoming the news of improved state revenues in Pierre. Senator Jim Mehlhaff says Republicans are focusing on providing increased funding for the so-called big three: education, state employee salaries and community service providers. Mehlhaff says lawmakers are discussing the possibility of a 1.25% increase for the big three.
Democratic House Leader Erin Healy says the extra revenues will make a big difference, and will allow for some level of increase in areas that need it most. Leaders of both houses are beginning the process of setting their budget priorities now that the revenue figures are in.
Governor Rhoden is also weighing in on the subject. He is recommending a 1% increase.
