PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — An effort to “smoke out” a bill to establish Native American charter schools failed to receive the necessary votes to bring it to the House floor.
Senate Bill 66 was killed before the House Education Committee Wednesday but an effort to revive and bring it before the full House floor was underway Thursday afternoon.
Rep. Peri Pourier of Oglala County brought the effort in the House as Sen. Troy Heinert of Mission, the prime sponsor, watched in the chamber. It was only minutes after the Senate passed the “riot boosing” bill, sending it to the Governor’s desk.
Heniert’s Native American education bill had received unanimous, bipartisan support in the Senate but ultimately did not have enough support in the House Committee or the full floor to be considered.
The bill now stands lost in the 95th session of the South Dakota State Legislature.
