PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — The South Dakota House has voted to raise the age for tobacco from 18 to 21.
The age change would bring the state into alignment with a new federal law.
Supporters say it would help cut down on young people smoking and vaping.
The bill now goes to the State Senate.
The plastic bag bill has also been approved by the State Senate. It would prohibit local governments from banning plastic bags, plastic straws and the like.
Supporters say it would do away with the confusion of various municipalities having different local laws. But some environmental groups say it stands in the way of local control and of getting plastic off the streets and out of creeks and streams.
The plastics bill now heads to the House.
