DES MOINES, IA (KELO.com) — Landowners are calling on federal regulators to slow things down. Safety hearings on carbon capture pipelines entered their second day in Des Moines today. Landowners impacted by two proposed projects in the region are lining up to express their concerns, including Dr. Meridith McCain of Iowa.
The family farm she grew up on is close to one of the lines. She’s concerned about the dangerous levels of carbon dioxide the pipelines will carry.
Officials of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) heard plenty of emotional testimony covering a wide range of concerns. Some landowners testified that they had already been told by insurance companies that they may not be able to obtain Liability Insurance policies if a CO2 pipeline crosses their land.
PHMSA is charged with developing safety requirements for the pipeline projects–which both would run through South Dakota. A common theme from the landowners: they want a moratorium on pipeline development and construction until adequate safety standards can be developed.
