SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (kelo.com) – The City of Sioux Falls City Council funds a proposed grant program designed to increase access to healthy food and beverages in the community. The proposal was made by second term mayor Paul TenHaken. The issue came about with the closing of the Hy-Vee grocery store at 12th & Kiwanis.
The closure of the Hy-Vee created what’s know as a food desert. The Oxford Dictionary defines a food desert as an urban area in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food.
The grant received approval by the Sioux Falls City Council at their meeting Tuesday night in a resounding unanimous vote. The Eat Well, Sioux Falls program will offer one-time monetary award(s) to incentivize interventions that increase access to healthy food options in specified food access priority areas. The total amount approved to fund the program is $400,000.
