PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — It only took about 18 hours into the New Year for the Pierre Fire Department to get called into action.
A family of four escaped unharmed, but a mobile home in Pierre received smoke and fire damage after a fire started in the laundry room area of the home yesterday evening.
Fire Chief Ian Paul says firefighters were called to the north-central part of Pierre.
Paul says the fire department made an aggressive interior attack through the front door and extinguished the blaze shortly after arrival. The mobile home suffered heavy interior fire damage in the laundry room and heavy smoke damage throughout the home.
The occupants were initially alerted to the fire after seeing smoke coming from an electrical switch. The fire appeared to be accidental and started in the laundry area of the home, but Paul says the cause is still under investigation.
The Pierre Fire Department has been busy of late with fires in residential structures and says it again is a reminder to be prepared with a working smoke detector….
The American Red Cross provided temporary accommodations for the home’s occupants. If you’re interested in a free smoke detector you can contact the Pierre Fire Department Headquarters at 773-7401.
