PIERRE, SD – After labor, most retailers’ highest operating cost is credit card swipe fees. This has many South Dakota businesses wondering about the best way to manage the increasing costs and allowable options for counteracting those increases.
“Credit card brand rules dictate when and if a business can pass on a swipe fee and dictate the amount the business must absorb,” said Nathan Sanderson, Executive Director of the South Dakota Retailers Association. “Surcharging rules can be both tricky and confusing to navigate.”
Sanderson added that there are also significant financial and business implications if surcharges are applied incorrectly.
To help South Dakota businesses understand the rules governing swipe fees, the Retailers Association is on the road providing free educational forums on the topic. They’ll feature a brief presentation followed by an opportunity for questions and answers. Time permitting, the Retailers Assoc. will also provide information about a variety of other business-related topics including, sales tax changes, the legislative outlook, and new nicotine sales regulations.
The forums are open to all South Dakota businesses.
