When emergency crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the north side of the building. Responders immediately began accounting for personnel and working to contain the fire.
Additional resources were called to the scene, including units from Marion, Hiawatha and Linn County, as well as Area Ambulance Service.
Plant personnel who were required to evacuate were accounted for and confirmed to responders that everyone was safe. No injuries or fatalities were reported among plant personnel, and no firefighter injuries were reported.
Fire crews successfully extinguished most of the fire. As of 6:25 p.m. Saturday, crews were continuing limited operations inside the building to address remaining hot spots and complete overhaul efforts.
The cause of the fire and explosion remains under investigation.
