NEWTON, I.A. (KELO.com) – Chemical fumes touched off an emergency response at the Iowa State Prison in Newton.
The fumes were from a chemical adhesive used by a contractor on a roofing project.
9 staff members and 10 inmates were evaluated and cleared of any serious health concerns.
Operations have returned to normal.

Following the September 2 incident at Newton Correctional Facility, the Iowa Department of Corrections (IDOC) provides the following update regarding facility operations and the well-being of staff and incarcerated individuals.
The temporary emergency response was triggered by fumes from a chemical adhesive used by a third-party contractor during a routine roofing construction.
9 Staff members and 10 incarcerated individuals were evaluated and have been cleared. On-site medical reassessments for all potentially impacted individuals are complete and will continue as a precautionary measure.
Safety officials from IDOC and the Department of Administrative Services (DAS) have approved the facility safe to resume normal operations.
