PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — A chronic shortage of teachers on reservations and in remote areas has the South Dakota Education Department considering an alternative teacher certification exam. Pass Rates for the required Praxis teacher exam vary by race, with minorities showing the lowest pass rates. Minnesota and New Mexico have exam alternatives, but South Dakota Education Association President Stephanie Hageman isn’t sure a change is the right move. “Is this opening a can of worms for the entire state, and lowering expectations of the highly qualified educators that we currently have or are seeking in the state of South Dakota?”
Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate tribal Education Director Sherry Johnson says the change could help to provide teachers from Reservations, which she believes would be a step forward.
