SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — An officer was wounded and the suspect was killed in a shootout involving Sioux Falls police on the city’s east side Tuesday night. Assistant Police Chief Nick Cook says officers were checking the wellbeing of a person in the 3200 block of East 20th when they began taking gunfire from a person in a garage. He says “Our officers took cover, although the gunfire continued, and one of our police officers was shot. Our officers returned fire, and the suspect, who was identified as a 55-year old Sioux Falls resident was later found to be deceased. Our police officer was transferred to a local hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.”
Officers from the Highway Patrol, the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office and a Federal Agency were involved in the standoff. The investigation is being handled by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation.
