SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — An ad campaign designed to reduce the problem of panhandling in downtown Sioux Falls worked, but is facing criticism in this year’s Mayoral campaign. The theme is “Handouts don’t help – but you can”. It’s an effort to encourage giving to the agencies that provide help to the homeless and indigent. Homeless Services Coordinator Michelle Treasure says it’s been effective. “We started this last year in 2025 and because we did see such great success with this, we felt like this was important to carry this forward into 2026. We plan to run this through the entire summer, through mid-August.”
All five candidates for Mayor say criticism of the campaign is justified, and believe the city should prioritize other things.
