MADISON, SD (KELO.com) — They call it the demographic cliff, and it’s threatening the existence of colleges and universities across the country. Enrollment numbers have been declining in elementary and secondary schools…and now in higher education. South Dakota’s University System is weathering the storm with the help of several years of tuition rate freezes. Dakota State University Vice President of Student Affairs, Amy Crissinger says the school’s early move to online education has also helped. “One of the things we’ve got going for us is we have a solid on-campus population, but also the decades of online education that we’ve been engaged with heavily insulated us from that.” Crissinger says DSU’s strong graduate program mix has also helped to maintain steady enrollment.
