PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Time is growing short and the options are narrowing for the South Dakota legislature to adopt property tax relief this year. Lawmakers started the session with dozens of potential plans – most of which have been defeated. House Majority Leader Scott Odenbach says there’s still time, but in the end, ‘You’ve got to have the votes.” Sioux Falls Representative Erik Muckey says House Bill 1308B was a bipartisan effort to provide relief, but says, “Instead of working with us, unfortunately, current and former House GOP leadership killed a meaningful tax policy that would have offered tax relief for 100% of South Dakotans and responsibly fund state government because of their own partisan, petty bickering.” Lawmakers from both parties say time is growing short.
