PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Governor Rhoden wants the State Supreme Court to weigh in on whether the Lieutenant Governor can cast a vote to break a tie in the Senate. That’s been the practice in the Senate since the early days of statehood. Lt. Governor Tony Venhuizen cast a tie-breaking vote on a bill Friday, January 23rd. His vote was challenged by Senator Chris Karr who said the state Constitution says only those elected to serve in the Senate are allowed to vote for final approval of bills in the chamber. More tie votes are possible this year, with one Senator on extended absence due to an illness.
