PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Supporters of providing free school meals for some students has cleared its first hurdle in the South Dakota legislature. Democratic Representative Kadyn Wittman of Sioux Falls sponsored the bill, as she has in past years. She testified the meals are already being provided, but schools are left to cover the expense in most cases through fundraising and other charitable gifts.
Republican Senator Brandon Wipf of Huron testified in favor of the bill, saying it’s wrong to punish kids for their parent’s failure or inability to pay. The committee voted 13-1 to recommend its approval by the House Appropriations Committee.
