PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — She calls them the utility knife of the health care system, and Community Health Workers – CHW’s – hold an important key to future development of South Dakota’s Rural Health Care system. State Health Secretary Melissa Magstadt briefed legislators Friday morning on that part of the state’s application for funding from the new federal Rural Health Transformation Project. CHW’s are already in place in several places across the state, and are saving money for the state through relationships that allow them to make recommendations to patients that are more effective and efficient in negotiating their way through the health care system. The state was granted 189-million dollars for the first year of the project. Governor Rhoden is asking for quick approval of spending authority to get the project up and running quickly.
