PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Governor Larry Rhoden laid out his legislative plan for lawmakers in Pierre Tuesday afternoon. He listed a number of accomplishments made with lawmakers’ help in the year he’s been in office, and said there’s more to do. At the top of his list is his plan to help reduce property tax burden for homeowners. It calls for a 1/2-percent sales tax increase that could be adopted by counties that want to use it, applying the proceeds to property tax relief. He called it a conservation approach to dealing with rising property taxes, saying it’s an option – not a mandate. The Governor says his plan could be paired with other ideas lawmakers have been working on over the past year. He also plans to hold Town Hall meetings across the state to hear ideas from state residents.
