CANTON, SD (KELO.com) — Lincoln County Commissioners are struggling to find a way to put the Marv Skie-Lincoln County Airport in the black. They agree it’s been operating at a deficit for years, but the size of that deficit is a matter of debate. It ranges from about 70-thousand dollars a year on the low side all the way up to 320-thousand when capital outlays are included. Commissioner Joel Arends says it’s time to protect the taxpayer.
One option under consideration is to build new hangars and increase hangar rental. Proponents say that would help make the airport profitable enough to overcome the oncoming deficits within three to five years. The commission will debate options on overcoming the debt in coming weeks.
