SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — If you have a heartbeat and can show up once a week, you’re qualified. Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken and Police chief Jon Thum are renewing the call for volunteer mentors for kids early this year. This morning, the Mayor introduced Ephraim, who’s mentoring the Mayor in at least one skillset – chess. Ephraim revealed to reporters the Mayor doesn’t win very often in their weekly matches. Ephraim says Mayor Paul is also an ‘OK’ soccer player.
The important thing is the Mayor shows up for their weekly session. The Mayor says statistics show kids that meet with a mentor regularly are 46% less likely than their peers to use illegal drugs. They’re 27% less likely to start drinking alcohol. Stats like that convince the two leaders to be a part of the solution, and to continue encouraging others to do the same.
