The Project Prison Reset Task Force was unanimous in recommending construction of a 650-million-dollar men’s prison in Sioux Falls.
Now, the job is to convince the legislature to agree. Governor Larry Rhoden has released the draft legislation that will be considered during a special legislative session.
This week’s resignation of Corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko appeared to give new life to the prison proposal, after 20 lawmakers had publicly called for her removal. State Senator Kevin Jensen says the resignation is a terrible reason to vote for the prison plan. He says the special session should be canceled or limited to the land agreement to purchase the property in Sioux Falls.
