PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — It was a nearly audible sigh of relief in Pierre on Tuesday. The Legislature’s Joint appropriations Committee restored over three million dollars in budget cuts proposed for South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Executive Director Julie Overgaard has been with Public Broadcasting in the state for over 37 years. She said the fight against the cuts proposed by former Governor Kristi Noem in her budget address in December has been the most challenging she has faced in her tenure. Overgaard expressed her thanks to committee members as they voted to restore SDPB’s budget.
The Public Broadcasting budget was just one of several approved on Tuesday. The Appropriations Committee will present a complete balanced budget before the Legislature adjourns on Thursday – which marks the end of the main run of this year’s legislative session.
