SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — School bells will be ringing soon, and Feeding South Dakota is gearing up. They’re gearing up to make sure that students who deal with food insecurity get the nutrition they need. Communications Director Stacy Andernacht says the agency is getting ready to resume the popular back pack program at schools across the state.
Each week, students that need food for the weekend are given a back pack filled with food. Andernacht says families that are interested can check with their local schools.
Students facing food insecurity often have their nutritional needs met during the school year through the free and reduced school lunch program. The Back Pack program fills the gap on the weekends by providing students with a back pack full of kid-friendly, nutritious food to take home with them on Fridays.
