PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — A South Dakota Legislative committee tapped the brakes today on plans to allow more non-resident waterfowl licenses to be issued next fall. The prairie pothole region in the northeastern part of the state is viewed as some of the best waterfowl hunting area in the nation, and that’s where the concern lies. State Wildlife Division Director Tom Kirschman says the conflict between resident and non-resident hunting interests isn’t anything new.
The Legislature’s Rules committee denied adding the extra licenses for now, saying the question needs more study and review. They may consider the proposal again later in the summer, which would allow enough time to place it in effect for the fall hunting season.
