WASHINGON, DC (KELO.com) — Tribal leaders have declared states of emergency due to runaway crime on the reservations. Tribes are having a tough time recruiting officers for law enforcement. Senator Mike Rounds says it’s a long-running problem.
Tribal leaders are trying to get a handle on runaway crime rates on the reservations…but they have a shortage of law officers. Recruiting has been tough, because new officers have to go through months of training, and the nearest tribal training center is in New Mexico. Senator Mike Rounds says it’s a problem he dealt with when he was governor.
Now that appears to have a good chance of happening. The Dakota Scout is reporting that Governor Kristi Noem says the state’s police academy will offer training exclusively to tribal police recruits this summer. She says Attorney General Marty Jackley has agreed to establish a tribal law enforcement training course specifically for tribal law enforcement recruits.
