SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — One of South Dakota’s best workforce recruitment strategies is to prevent young students from leaving the state. That’s especially true in critical areas like medical practice. Dr. Tim Ridgeway, the Dean of the USD School of Medicine says med school graduates are filling critical roles in the rural areas of the state.
He says that number goes up to 75-percent for those who complete their residency in South Dakota. Dr. Ridgeway says those returning med school grads are making a big difference in treating conditions that affect the state’s residents.
South Dakota’s Medical School graduates rank in the top quartile of all medical school graduates nationwide. And, Dr. Ridgeway says, rural areas of the state are reaping the benefits.
And, as for the future, Dr. Ridgeway says Artificial Intelligence and other technological breakthroughs will make a huge difference, but in the end, the human touch will always be important.
USD’s School of Medicine has had more than 25-hundred students graduate over its 50-year history as a four-year degree granting program.
