PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Prison funding is on hold…at least for now. The Legislature’s Joint Appropriations Committee deferred action on transferring over a quarter of a billion dollars to get things going on a proposed new men’s penitentiary near Harrisburg. Former House Speaker Steve Haugard testified against funding the new prison…saying the focus needs to be on a comprehensive corrections plan rather than a new building.
Committee members deferred a decision on spending for the men’s prison, but approved money for a new women’s prison in Rapid City.
