SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls City Councilors are in the early stages of overcoming a shortage of childcare in the city. In-home childcare operators are dropping out of the business because of increasing costs and lower profits. Councilor Greg Neitzert wants city officials to reach out to those former operators to identify problems in the field.
Councilor Rich Merkouris says in-home childcare is the most affordable model…but many in-home providers have left the business.
Councilors are also looking at models from other states, including models that call for state and employer contributions to reduce costs. The council may create a Childcare Coordinator position in city hall to develop plans to encourage people to enter the childcare field.
