PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — South Dakota brags about having no state income tax, but some lawmakers say there may be one just around the corner. State House Speaker Hugh Bartels of Watertown says a measure to repeal the sales tax on groceries that’s expected to be on the November ballot would remove taxes on a lot more than just groceries because of a change in the proposal’s language.
Bartels believes the language change was intentional, and could lead to a state income tax if the ballot measure is approved by voters.
