PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — South Dakota legislators are facing a tighter budget than they’ve seen for several years. Governor Noem is proposing a three-percent increase in state funding for K-12 education, but Education Secretary Joe Graves says the Governor wants to make sure teachers receive a fair share of the increase.
Recognizing that the compliance formula for increasing teacher pay hasn’t been working, the Noem Administration is offering another one for lawmakers to consider. Secretary Graves hopes school districts get the message.
Governor Noem says since she took office, education funding has increased 26-percent, but teacher pay continues to be among the lowest in the nation.
