BRIDGEWATER, SD (KELO.com) — We’re into the month of October and setting records. But they aren’t the kind of records farmers are looking for. We’re breaking old records for heat – which is compounding an already dry year. Down on the Farm today, Bridgewater area farmer Jason Hofer and his neighbors are all out working in their combines.
Once the frost comes and the stalks dry out more the concern will turn to stalk breakage and ears dropping to the ground. Hofer says yields and moisture content are spotty.
With the combines running, the dust clouds are swirling. It’s the favorite time of year for many farmers. Hofer says it’s what he looks forward to all year.
Yet, there’s always that underlying tension – as one wonders how things will turn out.
So far, Hofer has about 20-percent of his corn harvested, and hasn’t started on the bean harvest yet.
