SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Striking a balance between competing interests can be tough. That’s the conclusion of Minnehaha County Commissioner Dean Karsky. He says the decision on safety setback zones for Carbon Capture Pipelines was the toughest he’s faced in more than a decade as an elected official.
On a 3-2 vote, commissioners reduced safety setback zones from the 750-feet recommended by the Planning and Zoning Commission a month ago. Calling that distance unworkable for routing a pipeline through the county, they reduced the distance to 330-feet. Landowners like Joy Hohn of Hartford say the ordinance adopted by County Commissioners doesn’t do enough to protect citizens.
Federal Regulators are still working on safety rules to deal with the CO-2 pipelines, which will run through this region. The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission will also weigh in on the issue later this year.
