SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Tornado season typically hits the Midwest by summer. This year was early. In view of our recent barrage of storms, how can we prepare for what may be yet to come?
Tornadoes come with little or no warning. Funnel clouds are not always visible to the bare eye.
A watch indicates potential; a warning means observation.
Here are some warning signs to watch for. The sky turns dark green. An odd calm follows a thunderstorm. You hear a train roar. You see a debris cloud coming and pieces falling from the sky.
If your city sounds an alarm, seek shelter right away. Take cover in a basement, or a reinforced small room with no windows.
But don’t wait to face the storm. Review your insurance policy. Secure legal documents. Assemble a 72-hour emergency kit. Practice safety drills.
Keep your contacts close to communicate. Stay tuned to your local radio station for urgent updates.
