SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting Thursday night in Sioux Falls.
Someone called for a welfare check in the 1900 block of West 6th Street.
An escalating struggle ensued between the victim and police officers.
Chief Jon Thum says police did use verbal and less lethal means to try to subdue the victim.
The victim had a knife.
Two officers received non-life-threaten cuts.
Another officer shot the victim.
Thum says all the officers on the scene had body cameras on them. However, under state law, that footage cannot be released.
Thum also said the loss of human life, no matter how it happens is “obviously tragic.”
The police did not release the victim’s name.
