SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) – The strong economic position of Sioux Falls means the time is right to advance a proposal to refund property taxes to qualified elderly and disabled homeowners. That’s according to City Council member Curt Soehl. Soehl says the proposal has been in the works for more than a year and now the time is right.
The proposal would tie the qualifications to the state’s assessment freeze. Soehl says that’s to get the maximum impact for those who need it the most.
“One of the things as a Council member and you sit through the Board of Equalization and listen to people talk about their taxes, those hardest hit are those who can’t afford it,” Soehl told the Council.
If passed, checks for up to $500 would be issued by March 31st.
Final action on the proposal is scheduled for Tuesday, February 15th.
