SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) – After years of negotiations, most of the area near 41st and Ellis known as the Prairie Meadows Addition has been annexed into the City of Sioux Falls.
City staff and residents of the area described a process of more than 10 years to finally arrive at this day. Even now, the decision is not totally unanimous among residents. 87 of the 113 property owners signed the voluntary annexation petition, so 2/3 of the addition have been annexed. Opposition was centered along 42nd Street and was not included in the resolution.
The most recent and successful effort was championed by the Prairie Meadows Sanitary District, as maintenance, fees, and upgrades costs to the sewer system had overwhelmed them. The sanitary district also was facing the expiration of a significant grant. Geoff Davis, a resident, and member of the Sanitary District board, told the City Council that sewer upgrades could have cost residents $17,000 per household. Instead, he said they’ve been able to save approximately $100 per month after negotiations with the city.
The City Council approved the annexation 6-0
