SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) – The Sioux Falls City Council is considering a change to the ordinances that regulate garbage pick-up. The current city law prohibits garbage to be left curbside. Instead, garbage haulers provide a valet service by getting the garbage from its storage location, emptying the can, and returning it to storage. During COVID-19, the Council temporarily lifted those requirements. Now, the Council is considering making the service optional and allowing haulers and their customers to determine where garbage cans should be left on pick-up day.
Proponents for the change, including many garbage haulers, say the change will allow haulers to be more efficient and lower emissions. The businesses are struggling with workforce shortages like other businesses.
Opponents were concerned that haulers would increase the cost of valet service, and it would have a negative impact on the elderly and disabled customers.
Councilor Greg Neitzert plans to offer an amendment to keep the current standards, saying there isn’t a problem that needs to be fixed.
Second reading for the proposed change will be November 16.
