SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) The City of Sioux Falls is moving forward with a plan to sell the surface parking lot at 400 South 1st Avenue. The City Council approved a resolution that advances a proposal to sell the lot for development as a mixed-use property with 150 residential units and 5,000 square feet of retail space.
Currently, the lot provides 50 leased parking spaces, although only 34 are currently being leased. City planners told the City Council that those leases could be absorbed by nearby parking ramps or lots, specifically the Pavilion ramp, the Shrine lot, or the 1st Avenue ramp.
While several of the council members had voiced previous frustration with the process, they expressed support for the outcome and proposed development project intended for the parking lot.
Council member Curt Soehl said he didn’t think the project had started very well and, though it might surprise a lot of people, he said he was going to vote in favor of the project after asking many tough questions of the city planners and city attorney’s office. He praised the staff for their respectful responses and apologized for being a pest.
Council members Christine Erickson and Janet Brekke agreed with Soehl’s comments about the process but also supporting the ultimate outcome with the sale of the surface lot and the proposed project.
