SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) – During an informational meeting, the Sioux Falls City Council learned the results of a garbage container survey conducted by the Public Works Department. The survey was conducted during August with 4,000 people participating. During COVID-19, Mayor Paul TenHaken issued an emergency order allowing curbside trash pick-up. That emergency order has expired. Although more than half the survey respondents didn’t know their garbage cans should not be on the curb anymore.
Current ordinances specify that the hauler retrieves the trash from an inconspicuous location, beside or behind the building, and trash containers should not be left curbside.
58% of those surveyed supported the option of curbside pick-up. Garbage haulers also support the option, saying it would ease problems caused by a shortage of drivers. The haulers also say having residents place their trash curbside for pick-up would reduce the amount of time the trucks are on the street and reduce emissions.
The Solid Waste Planning Commission has recommended changing the ordinance to allow containers to be placed adjacent to the structure or curbside
on collection day, subject to what the hauler and customer agree upon.
