MITCHELL, S.D. (KMIT) — The Mitchell School Board reinstated a mask mandate for the Mitchell School District Monday night, despite vocal opposition from members of the public who showed up to the meeting.
The mandate will begin Wednesday and will be revisited on November 8. Masks will be required in all school district buildings from 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and will be required on all school buses when children are present.
The meeting was moved from the MCTEA building to the Performing Arts Center due to the attendance of several hundred people. The issue was discussed for an hour.
Board member Shawn Ruml said his ‘yes’ vote held true to a promise during a recent election to “incorporate masks when the numbers go up and work to remove them when the numbers lower.”
“South Dakota COVID numbers are increasing, and the inevitable surge will soon arrive, although I hope I’m definitively wrong on that,” Ruml said.
