SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — With time pressure to have the new medical cannabis ordinances in place before October 4th, efforts to amend a zoning ordinance to reduce the setback from sensitive areas to 500 feet were defeated at a joint council and county meeting
Instead, medical cannabis establishments in the joint Sioux Falls and Lincoln County jurisdiction will need to be set back 1000 feet from single-family homes, schools, churches, and other sensitive areas.
Several Council Members and commissioners voiced their support for considering the amendments in the future.
The facilities allowed in the joint jurisdiction area will look different from what is allowed in the city of Sioux Falls. The Sioux Falls City Council’s ordinances would limit the medical cannabis business to 5 dispensaries and testing facilities. In Lincoln County and in the joint jurisdiction area, facilities can include cultivation, testing, cannabis product manufacturing, a dispensary, or any combination of those facilities at one location. There is also no limit on the number of facilities.
Representatives of the cannabis industry association have praised the open communication and collaboration with Lincoln County’s officials.
