YANKTON, S.D. (WNAX) — Utility companies across the country are rapidly moving toward reducing carbon emissions connected to generating electricity.
South Dakota Public Utilities Commission Chairman Chris Nelson said it’s been going on for a while.
“In South Dakota nearly 80% of the electricity generation is carbon-free, and that number is increasing as we add more wind and solar generation in South Dakota,” Nelson said.
Nelson said while federal and state regulations play a part, most carbon reductions are driven by the marketplace. He said utilities decide what types of generation and carbon reductions they will use and then come to the PUC for rate approvals.
