SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Home building in Sioux Falls continues to increase at a rapid pace.
The city approved nearly as much money in new residential building permits from January to March of 2021 as the first three months of 2019 and 2020 combined.
“It’s quite amazing, really,” city building permits chief Butch Warrington said on KELO Radio’s It’s Your Business with Bill Zortman. “I think part of that is because we had such a nice winter, but we’re not slowing down at all.”
The city approved $61.7 million in building permits from January through March of 2021, compared to $38.2 million by that point 2020 and $24.1 million by that point in 2019.
Warrington said those numbers continued to increase in April, saying in the last week alone the city had approved permits for 31 for single-family homes and 15 townhome units.
Commercial development is also on the rise. The city approved $66.6 million in new commercial building permits in the first three months of 2021 compared to $28 million in 2020 and $54.3 million in 2019.
