SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — On March 30th, 2021, at approximately 6:53 p.m., Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was dispatched to a reported structure fire in an apartment building in the 4200 block of South West Avenue.
Initial reports were that a wall and porch were on fire in an 8 unit apartment building. The first arriving fire crew found light smoke conditions coming from the rear of the building and quickly made entry into the building to investigate. Crews found heavy smoke and a fire burning in one of the apartment units. They worked to quickly search the building and extinguish the fire. No occupants were found in the building and the fire was out in 5 minutes from on-scene arrival. Crews then worked for another 2 hours to ensure extinguishment of the fire area.
There were no injuries reported from civilians or responders. Two units of the building sustained moderate damage and were uninhabitable, displacing 8 total residents. The American Red Cross was assisting those displaced. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded with 5 fire trucks, 3 support vehicles, and 24 firefighters.
