SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Development in Sioux Falls continues at a rapid pace, largely driven by a rise in apartment buildings.
The city handed out permits for $42 million worth of new residential buildings in January 2020, up from $16 million in January 2019 and $17 million in the first month of last year.
“It’s the best January I think I can ever remember having,” City Building Permit Chief Butch Warrington told KELO Radio’s It’s Your Business with Bill Zortman this week.
Warrington said a mild winter and the promise of new jobs in Sioux Falls helped drive the numbers up.
“I think they’re thinking about all of the people that could be coming into town to take employment here,” Warrington said, later mentioning the huge new Amazon facility Sioux Falls approved in December.
On the whole the city approved almost $57 million in building permits in January 2021, up $27 million from last January.
