SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls has once again broken its year-end construction valuation record. The City’s Planning and Development Services Department reports that 7,222 building permits filed in 2020 were valued at $919.6 million.
“To set a record this year speaks to the resiliency of our City and represents our confidence in the future,” said Jeff Eckhoff, Director of Planning and Development Services. “I am extremely proud of our staff who, with the rest of the community, worked under unique, and often difficult, conditions to get the job done.”
The City calculates its year-end construction valuation based on all new commercial and residential construction permits, as well as permits for additions, repairs, remodels, and renovations filed within Sioux Falls during the previous calendar year.
Compared to 2019, Sioux Falls saw a 16.1 percent increase in total valuation. The previous record ($786.6 million) was set in 2018.
The top five largest projects by value permitted in 2020 include:
- Amazon $218,181,988
- Westview Heights Apartments $27,389,138
- The Flats at Prairie Point $22,127,633
- Pinnacle Pointe Apartments $18,800,000
- Aspen Heights Condos $17,000,000
Other notable statistics from the 2020 Year-End Building Permits Report include:
- Sioux Falls saw a record year for dwelling unit construction at 2,717. The previous record was set in 2016 (2,647 dwelling units).
- Home construction saw one of its strongest years in the past decade with 742 new single-family dwellings and 392 townhouse units permitted in 2020.
