SIOUX FALL, S.D. (KELO.com)– Avera Health physicians Dr. Jawad Nazir, Dr. Anthony Hericks, and Deb Stansbury was the first to be vaccinated for COVID-19 in the state earlier today.
This could be seen as a bright spot as the country reaches a grim milestone of 300,000 deaths due to the virus.
Monday morning, a New York City intensive care unit nurse became the first person in the United States to receive a coronavirus vaccine, calling it a sign that “healing is coming,” according to a Reuters report.
Avera Health received its first supply of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine at 8:45 Monday morning.
But not before being blessed by Benedictine and Presentation nuns who own the healthcare system before its distribution.
According to the Avera Health website, the health system is finalizing how it will allocate its first few shipments of the vaccine based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state officials, positivity rates, and national best practices.
There are currently 12,623 active cases of Covid-19 with 441 hospitalizations in South Dakota.
