SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — With COVID-19 vaccine approval at hand, experts say the rural nature of South Dakota, the state’s limited capability to store and distribute the vaccine and reluctance by some residents to take the vaccine could slow the delivery and reduce the effectiveness of the vaccines.
Medical experts estimate that between 60% and 90% of a population needs to be vaccinated or otherwise immunized against COVID-19 to effectively protect people from the virus.
Health experts are concerned that the state might have trouble meeting that threshold even as the new vaccines are seen as the only hope to end the pandemic.
