SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Acting upon the recommendation of Athletic Directors, the Great Plains Athletic Conference Presidents have voted to limit the number of men’s and women’s basketball games for the coming season to 25.
That is a reduction of five games from the normal schedule.
The GPAC men’s teams play 20 conference games and the women’s teams have 22 conference games because of the extra team in the College of St. Mary’s. This means women’s teams will have only three non-conference games this season, while the men will have five.
The conference put no restrictions on the starting date of the season. They will, however, move some conference game dates back into December to allow for a week to ten days at the end of the year for make-up games.
Dakota Wesleyan women’s coach Jason Christensen says the Lady Tigers will likely still play at the Pentagon Classic November 7th and 8th against Presentation College and Valley City State. That will leave him with only one more non-conference game to schedule. It is likely that the DWU men will also play at the Pentagon.
The new restriction on the number of games leaves competing during the Mike Miller Hoops City Classic in doubt. Teams will be allowed to schedule two extra games, for a total of 27, but those two games cannot be counted as official wins or losses.
Area teams include Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, Mount Marty in Yankton, and Morningside, Dordt, and Northwestern in Iowa.
